HISTORY OF ST. MICHAEL’S SCHOOL, DURGAPUR
The School was formed by the Bishop of Calcutta and the Metropolitan of India under the Caption- ‘Durgapur Project’ in 1963. The School, however, opened only in 1966. With the formation of the Church of North India in 1970 and the creation of the Diocese of Durgapur, the school became a part of the new Diocese. The actual handover took place only in 1994 and the Diocese of Durgapur thus became the founder body of the School. The school welcomes the Bishop and his family.
Today the School is run by a Board of Governors under the Chairmanship of the Right Reverend Sameer Isaac Khimla, the Bishop of Durgapur, who was installed on the 1st of December 2019. Under his visionary leadership, the school will expand exponentially and his service to the people of the city will also increase manifold in the coming years.
The School had humble beginnings. It started with only a Pre-primary Section to the South East of Bidhannagar. In one or two years it shifted to the present location with 2 or 3 pucca rooms and with some primary classes and slowly developed and ran a full primary school till 1977. The due recognition from the State Government was achieved in 1978 and the school authorities proceeded further with secondary classes and obtained affiliation from the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi the same year.
The first two ICSE(X) batches of 1983 and 1984 appeared from St. Thomas’ Boys’ School, Kidderpore. By 1985, ICSE(X) candidates were appearing from the school’s centre and in 2014, the thirty-first batch of ICSE(X) was sent up.
The school sent up its first ISC (XII) batch with Science and Commerce streams in 1989, and 2020 the thirty-second batch appeared for their Board Examinations. The Humanities (ISC) stream was started recently in 2014 and the first batch appeared in 2016. Since then, the course has gained momentum and become a popular choice for co-educational ISC (Humanities) in the city.
Since its establishment in 1966, St. Michael’s School, Durgapur has been one of the premier institutions in the city. With its focus on grooming students into thoughtful adults, it has become one of the well-known and reputed co-educational K-12 schools.
